Abstract
Objectives : Obesity is the metabolic diseases caused by an imbalance between food intake and energy consumption. This is a factor that increases the incidence of various diseases such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant and anti-obesity effects of Artemisia capillaris Thunberg.

Methods : The anti-oxidant activities of Artemisia capillaris Thunberg were measured by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay, total poly phenol and flavonoid. In this study, anti-obesity effects were confirmed by oil red O staining after MTT assay. The extracts were treated with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 §·/§¢ to examine the effect of toxicity on 3T3-L1 cells. oil red O staining was performed at concentrations (0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 §·/§¢) that did not exhibit toxicity.

Results : The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of Artemisia capillaris Thunberg were 49.49¡¾0.36 §·/g and 62.41¡¾0.76 §·/g. The antioxidant effect on DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging increased in dose-dependent respectively. oil red O results triglyceride accumulation was decreased in a concentration-dependent manner.

Conclusion : Artemisia capillaris Thunberg reduced triglyceride accumulation in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells, compared with positive control cells.
